NACDS Foundation Introduces Motivational Interviewing program

The National Association of Chain Drug Stores (NACDS) Foundation launched the Comprehensive Motivational Interviewing Training for Health Care Professionals (comMlt) program Nov. 18.

Developed by leading behavioral specialists, ComMlt is an innovative eight-hour online continuing education program that teaches nurse physicians, pharmacists and others in the health and wellness industries to motivate patients to make lasting healthful choices.

“The comMIt program provides a foundation for patient-centered medical care, empowering healthcare professionals to facilitate behavior changes that enable patients to achieve positive health outcomes,” NACDS Foundation President Kathleen Jaeger said.

ComMlt utilizes a patient-centered behavioral learning approach known as "motivational interviewing" that allows healthcare providers to actively involve patients in maximizing their own health, while also controlling any existing conditions they may have.

In addition, the program goes beyond the doctor’s office as motivational interviewing techniques allow pharmacists to help patients create lasting behavioral changes in regards to medicinal adherence.

The comMlt program was created for the NACDS Foundation by behavioral experts Bruce Berger, Ph.D., and William A. Villaume, Ph.D. The two doctors, who specialize in health behavior change and health communication, also co-authored the book “Motivational Interviewing for Health Care Professionals: A Sensible Approach."
