Pharmacist charged in alleged W.V. prescription drug ring

An area pharmacist, a physician employee in Georgia and two Kentucky women were allegedly involved in a highly orchestrated pharmaceutical drug syndicate in West Virginia.

West Virginia State Police Cpl. Brian Bean recently stated that the two women had been traveling to City Pharmacy in Charlestown, West Virginia since August, allegedly paying cash for a monthly supply of 150 30-milligram oxycodone pills, 150 10-mg methadone pills and 120 2-mg Xanax pills.

On Dec. 5, upon leaving the pharmacy with their alleged supply, Imogene G. Abshear, 65, of Lancaster, Kentucky, and Tina R. Hernandez, 42, of Greensburg, Kentucky, were detained by the police.

The two were charged with three counts of prescription fraud.

The pharmacist, David M. Wasanyi, 47, was charged Friday in Jefferson County, West Virginia with conspiracy to distribute controlled substances. These new charges ultimately caused Judicial Circuit Judge Michael D. Lorensen to revoke the bail set for Wasanyi due to a separate case from earlier this year.

Wasanyi was indicted in February by a Berkeley County grand jury on two counts of delivery of diazepam; one count of delivery of buprenorphine; three counts of false, fraudulent or omitted material information; and two counts of obstructing an officer.

Wasanyi's preliminary hearing is set for Tuesday.
