The American Society of Health System Pharmacists (ASHP) formally announced this week that it has joined the alliance for the Campaign for Sustainable Rx Pricing (CSRxP).

The ASHP organization as a whole, which includes pharmacists, student pharmacists and pharmacy technicians serving as health-care providers, has more than 43,000 members and has the same resolve to discover a market-based solution to drug pricing as the CSRxP.

John Rother, executive director of the Campaign for Sustainable Rx Pricing, said ASHP could not have joined at a better time. He feels that ASHP brings a very important voice and perspective to their cause, noting the advantage of having pharmacists at the forefront of the fight for more affordable prescription drugs.

ASHP CEO Paul W. Abramowitz said the rising prices of prescription drugs is a major problem for the health care system, emphasizing that they are having a negative impact on patients. He supported the sentiments of Rother by expressing his eagerness to work with the CSRxP to bring patients the medications they depend on at a price they can afford.

The issue of rising prescription drug prices is beginning to gain momentum and is being brought into the national spotlight. Even presidential candidates have mentioned the issue recently.
