The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) praised the White House's proposal last week of putting $1.1 billion in federal money toward preventing prescription opioid abuse and heroin use.

As part of a partnership with the Obama administration, the ASHP is developing guidance, educational materials and other resources to help health officials address abuse and misuse of these medications.

“President Obama has made it clear that addressing the opioid overdose epidemic is a top priority, and the administration continues to reach out to ASHP and its members for support in this vital initiative,” ASHP CEO Paul Abramowitz said. “ASHP has long emphasized the critical role pharmacists in hospitals and clinics play in preventing prescription drug abuse – through recognition of opioid toxicity, preventing inappropriate prescribing and diversion prevention. As health care providers, pharmacists are actively involved in controlled substance management, while balancing the needs of patients in pain to receive safe, effective treatment.”

Representatives from the ASHP joined the president and others at the White House Opioids Action Summit that took place in Charleston, West Virginia in October.

The organization also is working closely with the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on the opioid abuse and heroin use issues.
