Study shows home infusion care results better than hospital and clinic care

A recent study by the CVS Health Research Institute, published in Healthcare: The Journal of Delivery Science and Innovation, shows that home infusion care is a safe and low-cost alternative to hospital or clinic infusion care.

Further, the patients' quality of life is improved while receiving treatments at a lower cost.

"As the U.S. health care payment system shifts from volume to value, we are focused on identifying new approaches to health service delivery that provide better care and improve patient outcomes while lowering costs," CVS Health Chief Medical Officer and study author Dr. Troyen A. Brennan said. "Our research shows that home infusion care is a promising model that is both cost- and clinically effective and is overwhelmingly preferred by patients when intravenous therapy is required."

Infusion therapy is used for a variety of conditions, including antibiotic treatments, chemotherapy and cystic fibrosis. Researchers found that patients receiving treatment at home had equally good or better outcomes than those treated in health care facilities. Patients reported that at-home treatments were less disruptive to their personal lives. The cost savings over the course of at-home treatments ranged from $1,928 to $2,974.
