Optum teams with Medecision and TriZetto to streamline states' MMIS

Optum announced this week that it is partnering with Medecision and TriZetto to launch the Optum Medicaid Management Services (OMMS) solution for state Medicaid Management Information Systems (MMIS).

OMMS allows states to purchase only the services they need to manage their programs. States can buy one or all of the IT, administrative or clinical services offered by Optum.

“The Optum solution is analogous to states purchasing the electricity they need rather than building the entire power plant,” Optum EVP Steve Larsen said. “Our state Medicaid clients have told us that traditional MMIS program administration approaches — now more than three decades old — needed upgrading to reflect the fast-paced environment and their broadened responsibilities under the Affordable Care Act; they welcome this modern, modular, services-based alternative.”

The change to modular solutions helps state avoid buying and installing new MMIS systems that require several years to fully install and implement. Instead, the states can purchase only the services they need to manage their programs and optimize their existing systems.

Optum has also been certified by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) as a Quality Improvement Organization (QIO)-like entity. When Optum performs quality improvement initiatives and reviews and analyzes cases and care, the state can receive 75 percent federal matching funds.
