Bacterial meningitis vaccine available at all Walgreens locations

Walgreens recently announced the availability of bacterial meningitis vaccine at all of its pharmacies, including Duane Reade pharmacies, and Healthcare Clinics.

The serogroup B meningococcal vaccine provides short-term protection against bacterial meningitis.

“We support the recommendations of health officials and stress that vaccination is the best protection against meningitis,” Walgreens President of Pharmacy and Retail Operations Richard Ashworth said. “Walgreens pharmacists and Healthcare Clinic nurse practitioners continue to play an important role in providing more convenient access to vaccinations and other preventive services, and these new vaccines can be instrumental in helping to control meningitis.”

Meningitis may have flu-like symptoms. Infected persons often suffer from a sudden fever, headache and stiff neck. The disease can also cause vomiting, confusion and a rash. It usually affects teens and young adults. It is spread by coughing and sneezing.

The Bexsero and Trumenba meningitis B vaccines may be given to individuals ages 10 through 25, depending on state laws regarding vaccinations. The vaccination does not need a prescription. It may be covered by the patient's insurance plan.

Walgreens can also provide the quadrivalent meningococcal vaccines for the A, C, W and Y meningitis serogroups. Restrictions may apply due to age, state law or health-related concerns.
