Naloxone has been made available without the need for a prescription in all Walgreens pharmacy locations in the Louisiana.
Naloxone is an antidote designed for opioid overdose treatment. Making the drug available over-the-counter is part of Walgreens' comprehensive national plan to help fight drug abuse.
“By making naloxone available without a prescription, we are making it easier for Louisiana families and caregivers to help their loved ones by having it on hand in case it’s needed,” Walgreens Regional Healthcare Director in Louisiana Rob Braley said. “As a pharmacy we are here to help people, and we are committed to making naloxone more accessible in the communities we serve.”
The medication is administered by injection or as nasal spray to reverse the effects of heroin or other drugs that contain opioids. Naloxone is now available over-the-counter in more than 150 Walgreens pharmacies across Louisiana and has been made available without prescription in 4,300 Walgreens pharmacies in 24 states. Walgreens announced its plans in February of this year to make naloxone available in 35 states and Washington, D.C.
