New data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services shows that major chain pharmacies such as CVS, Walgreens and Walmart account for over 79 percent of Prescription Drug Plans for the elderly.
The data also shows that over 69 percent of elderly patients have enrolled in Medicare Part D plans with major chain pharmacies.
Popular providers, such as Humana, and plans like CVS Health’s SilverScript are two of the biggest draws for most consumers. With the opportunity to have freedom of choice as to what to include in their plans, over 93 percent of elderly patients have enrolled in these programs.
The report also showed that pharmacies are accepting lower reimbursement rates to generate more traffic for their chains, allowing preferred networks to continue to grow.
