The Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy (AMCP) recently applauded Rep. Brett Guthrie's (R-KY) Pharmaceutical Information Exchange (PIE) Act of 2017 and its efforts toward its passage.

The bill is meant to give patients increased access to medication therapies as they are introduced, as well as give clearer economic and scientific information communications between entities that influence health, such as biopharmaceutical manufacturers and population health specialists.

"The PIE Act will help AMCP members better care for the patient populations they serve by aiding in forecasting and budgeting, enabling the implementation of value-based contracts, and expediting coverage decisions for emerging therapies granted breakthrough designation immediately upon FDA approval," AMCP CEO Susan Cantrell said.

Federal laws place a number of a limitations on FDA approval of new therapies, and this bill will seek to improve the roadblocks that are in place.
