AMERICAN SOCIETY OF HEALTH-SYSTEM PHARMACIST: New ASHP Certificate Program Offers Sterile Compounding Training for Institutions

American Society of Health-System Pharmacists issued the following announcement on April 18.

Online Training Education Program Readies Pharmacists, Technicians to Prepare Sterile Products

ASHP recently released the Sterile Product Preparation Institutional Training Certificate Program, a resource that allows institutions to train students and employees in the fundamental concepts required for safe and compliant sterile product preparation. The Sterile Product Preparation Institutional Training Program Certificate Program is the latest offering in ASHP’s Professional Certificate line.

The Sterile Product Preparation Institutional Training Certificate Program can be used by hospitals, colleges of pharmacy, and pharmacy technician training programs as stand-alone education or as a supplement to its existing education and training programs. The curriculum features eight modules designed to highlight the importance of aseptic processing and help pharmacists and pharmacy technicians develop the knowledge and skills necessary for safe and compliant sterile product preparation:

Evolution and Overview of Aseptic Processing

Core Competencies and Facilities Basics

Sterile Product Categorization

The Basics All Cleanroom Personnel Need to Know

Primary Engineering Controls

Compounding Basics in Laminar Airflow Systems

Secondary Engineering Controls

Navigating Equipment and Workflow Until the Final Check

Available for institutional purchase only, the Sterile Product Preparation Institutional Training Certificate Program enables an institution to review and approve learners for the certificate. To earn the professional certificate, participants must complete all eight modules and successfully demonstrate proficiency in aseptic technique under the supervision of the institution’s ASHP-approved administrator.

Participants will earn up to 17.25 hours of pharmacy continuing education credits for completing the program. The program offers three professional certificate options: Student, Low Risk, and Medium Risk.

“ASHP is committed to supporting efforts by institutions to prepare pharmacists and pharmacy technicians to provide high-quality patient care,” said Julie L. Webb, Senior Vice President of the ASHP Office of Professional Development. “The Sterile Product Preparation Institutional Training Program Certificate will help ensure that pharmacy staff are able to validate their ability to safely prepare the sterile medications needed to treat our sickest and most vulnerable patients.”

ASHP Professional Certificate Programs are self-guided, online continuing education programs for pharmacists and pharmacy technicians. Each program offers at least 15 hours of continuing education credit that can be earned upon completion of individual modules. Participants must complete all of the modules in a program as well as practice-based exercises to be eligible for an ASHP professional certificate.
