Walgreens and OptumRx recently announced a partnership that will result in the creation of a new pharmacy solution program aimed at changing prescription drug needs to benefit the consumer and help employers, health plans and members receive higher health outcomes and save more.

OptumRx, a subsidiary of UnitedHealth Group, is a free-standing business that provides pharmacy care services. It handles more than 1 billion in prescriptions on a yearly basis. Walgreens is a nationwide leading drugstore chain that belongs to the Retail Pharmacy USA Division of Walgreens Boot Alliance, Inc.

The goal of the partnership is to create a pharmacy experience that is convenient and accessible and that will deliver integrated pharmacy care to clients and members who are enrolled in the program. This includes providing OptumRx members who are eligible the option of having their 90-day prescriptions filled at home delivery copay levels at any of the 8,200 Walgreens pharmacy locations across the U.S. or through OptumRx’s home delivery service.

Other goals of the program are to provide better treatment outcomes to patients by allowing them to decide how they receive their medicines while offering 24/7 pharmacist availability and delivering clinical guidance to address specific diseases.
