Aetna filed an application earlier this year with the State of Maryland seeking approval to participate as a Medicaid managed care organization.
In Maryland, it will be
known as Aetna Better Health of Maryland.
“We are excited for this new prospect of building on our 30-year track record of successfully working with Medicaid recipients,” Aetna Medicaid Interim Head Deb Bacon said. “High-risk populations with complex, chronic health care needs will benefit from our experience and commitment to using innovative technology, payment reform and targeted health equity programs.”
Aetna is an experienced provider for Medicaid patients. It manages care for medically complex patients. Overall, Aetna serves approximately 46.5 million people with nearly 3 million under the Aetna Medicaid program. Its Medicaid program extends across 17 states.
Aetna provides information and resources to its members to assist them in making health care decisions. With a range of health insurance products and related services, Aetna is able to accommodate plans that serve employers, individuals and governmental units.
The application to provide Medicaid services is currently pending. The Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene will review and determine its suitability for Maryland's Medicaid consumers.
