South Dakota is marking National Rural Health Day on November 20, 2025, following a proclamation by Governor Larry Rhoden. The day highlights the state’s rural heritage and ongoing efforts to support healthcare in less populated areas.
“I am proud to live in and govern a state where our rural heritage is our strength. We will continue to make wise investments to support rural health to keep South Dakota strong, safe, and free,” said Governor Larry Rhoden.
Nearly 43 percent of South Dakotans reside in rural or frontier regions. Out of 66 counties statewide, 30 are classified as rural while 34 are considered frontier. This demographic underscores the importance of developing local solutions for healthcare access and support for families, first responders, and medical professionals throughout these communities.
The Jones County Ambulance Service has been named South Dakota’s 2025 Community Star by the National Organization of State Offices of Rural Health (NOSORH). This annual recognition honors those making significant contributions to rural health. The ambulance service was commended for its commitment and partnership with central South Dakota residents during emergencies.
“Rural health is a cornerstone of South Dakota’s identity and strength,” said South Dakota Department of Health Secretary Melissa Magstadt. “We celebrate the people and organizations who work every day to ensure that our rural and frontier communities receive high-quality, accessible care. Jones County Ambulance Service reflects the dedication, compassion, and resilience that make South Dakota strong. We are proud to recognize them as our 2025 Community Star.”
Jones County Ambulance Service will be featured on PowerOfRural.org, which highlights stories from across the country about individuals and groups working to improve healthcare in remote areas.
Since its creation in 2015, the Community Star Recognition Program has honored more than 400 individuals or organizations nationally for their positive impact on rural communities.
The South Dakota Office of Rural Health and Emergency Services partners with local agencies to enhance access to care, recruit healthcare workers, strengthen emergency services, aid rural health facilities, and increase use of technology for patients and providers.
