The South Dakota Department of Health announced on June 30 that the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program will implement new income guidelines beginning July 1, 2026. WIC is a supplemental nutrition program funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and provided at no cost to eligible mothers, infants, and children.
The program offers support for healthy eating, nutrition education, breastfeeding resources, and referrals to other essential services with the goal of improving family health and well-being. "WIC provides more than nutritious foods. It connects families with trusted support, nutrition education, breastfeeding resources, and services that help children thrive," said Department of Health Secretary Melissa Magstadt. "We encourage families to review the updated income guidelines and learn whether they qualify for this valuable program."
Eligibility for WIC is determined by annual household income in relation to family size. Families whose incomes do not exceed specified limits may qualify for assistance under the updated guidelines.
To determine eligibility or apply online for the WIC Program, individuals can visit the South Dakota WIC website or contact their local WIC office by phone. Office locations are listed under county listings in phone books or available on the web at the South Dakota WIC website.
WIC operates as an equal opportunity provider. More information about eligibility requirements and services is available at https://www.sd.gov/wic.
