CVS Health has released naloxone, an opioid overdose-reversal medication, for sale without the need of a prescription in all CVS Pharmacy locations in Texas.
A standing order has been established between CVS and Texas physicians that will permit the sale of naloxone in the state.
"Naloxone is a safe and effective antidote to opioid overdoses and by expanding access to this medication in our Texas pharmacies by the use of a physician's standing order for patients without a prescription, we can help save lives," VP of Pharmacy Professional Practices at CVS Pharmacy Tom Davis said. "We are dedicated to helping the communities we serve address and prevent drug abuse.”
Texas will be joined by 30 more states that will be allowed to sell naloxone without a prescription in CVS locations by August.
"CVS Health has been a leader in helping communities prevent prescription drug abuse and we applaud their work to increase access to this life-saving drug for patients without a prescription at CVS Pharmacy locations in Texas," President and CEO of Partnership for Drug-Free Kids Marcia Lee Taylor said. "Increasing access to naloxone is a critical public health priority that allows patients and their families to prevent opioid fatalities.”
