Publix fills 50 millionth free script

For the past eight years, Publix pharmacies have operated a free prescription program.

Last week, the company reached a milestone: filling its 50 millionth free prescription.

A free antibiotic program was launched after reseach revealed a need; the initiative has grown steadily since its 2007 implementation.

The program began by offering free antibiotics. Now, patients who suffer from such illnesses and conditions as high blood pressure, angina, diabetes and certain heart and kidney conditions also have access to free medications, based on need.

Antibiotics available through the program include amoxicillin, ampicillin, ciproflaxin, penicillin VK and sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim.

“We’re thrilled to have helped so many customers with free antibiotic prescriptions, diabetes management and medication adherence, as well as overcoming the financial barrier to taking their medications as prescribed,” Maria Brous, director of media and community relations for Publix, said. “We’ve continued to enhance our free prescription program to allow our customers to focus on family health and achieving their wellness goals.”

Patients who wish to take advantage of Publix's free prescription program need only to bring their prescription to a store, have the prescription transferred from another pharmacy or called in from a healthcare provider's office.

Free prescriptions are not limited.
