Anyone who visited specific locations in Hot Springs, South Dakota, during designated times may have been exposed to measles. Health officials advise self-monitoring for symptoms for 21 days after potential exposure. Individuals without immunity should consult their healthcare provider about protective measures such as vaccination or immune globulin.
The locations and times of possible exposure include Two Cows Creamery on June 19, 2025, from 12 pm to 7 pm MT, and Wandering Bison Coffee on June 19, 20, and 21, from 8:30 am to 11:30 am MT each day.
Measles symptoms manifest in two stages. Initially, individuals may experience a runny nose, cough, slight fever, and sensitivity to light. In the second stage, occurring between the third and seventh day of symptoms, a high fever ranging from 103-105°F develops alongside a red blotchy rash that spreads from the face to the rest of the body.
Dr. Joshua Clayton, state epidemiologist, stated: “We are sharing this information to help individuals who may have been exposed take steps to protect their health.” He added that South Dakotans lacking immunity can receive the MMR vaccine to prevent infection and its complications.
The measles vaccine is considered the most effective protection against infection. Immunity is recognized in those born before 1957; those who received one dose of MMR as children aged between 12 months and pre-school; those with two doses as school-aged children or adults at higher risk; or through lab-confirmed antibodies or past infection.
Typically administered at ages 12-15 months with a second dose at ages four to six years old, the MMR vaccine is safe and highly effective. It usually provides lifelong immunity with two doses. For international travel plans involving children starting at six months old, early vaccination is available.
