While no illnesses have been reported in relation to Gold Emblem tea, the raw material supplier informed the manufacturer that it contains an ingredient that tested positive for Salmonella. The supplier provides this ingredient to several manufacturers. The contaminated ingredient was found in a different company's product.
CVS Pharmacy has issued the voluntary recall and removed the affected Gold Emblem tea from its stores. It has also placed a do not sell code in its computer to prevent the sale of any affected products. Customers with cartons of the affected tea should return the product to the store for a refund.
The Salmonella bacteria causes diarrhea, fever, vomiting and pain in healthy adults. Young children, the elderly and those with weakened immune systems can develop a serious and sometimes deadly infection. If the infection reaches the bloodstream, it can cause arthritis, infected aneurysms and heart problems.
Approximately 200 cartons of the recalled tea had been sold at CVS stores. The voluntary recall is a precaution taken by CVS Pharmacy to protect its customers. Customers with questions and concerns can call CVS at 1-800-SHOP-CVS on weekdays between 8:30 a.m. and 7 p.m. EST.
