As summer brings an increase in home improvement projects, the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) advises residents to hire only licensed and qualified contractors. This initiative aims to help Michiganders make informed decisions when undertaking work on their homes or properties.

Marlon I. Brown, LARA Director, stated, “Verifying a contractor’s licensure protects both consumers and contractors. LARA is committed to ensuring that qualified professionals are on the job to help build our state.”

The Bureau of Construction Codes (BCC), part of LARA, manages the licensing of professionals involved in building, repairing, or renovating residential structures. Andrew Brisbo, BCC Director, stressed the importance of confirming a contractor's license as a crucial first step. “If a contractor can’t provide their license number or a copy of their license, that’s a red flag,” Brisbo noted. “Consumers should always verify credentials before the work begins.”

An official Michigan contractor license includes details such as the contractor’s name, license number, and expiration date.

While cost is often a deciding factor in choosing contractors, LARA warns against making large upfront payments. Instead, they recommend scheduling payments as work progresses to avoid potential fraud.

To ensure quality work, consumers are encouraged to ask for references from previous customers and consult with friends and neighbors or local associations for recommendations.
