The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) has partnered with the ABIM Foundation with "Choosing Wisely."
The
campaign is intended to reduce health care waste and help patients avoid unnecessary
risks when selecting treatment options.
“The Choosing Wisely campaign aligns with ASHP’s vision of ensuring that medication use will be optimal, safe, and effective for all people all of the time,” ASHP CEO Paul W. Abramowitz said. “ASHP is pleased to join Choosing Wisely, and we look forward to contributing the expertise of our members to advance the campaign’s goals.”
ASHP is the first pharmacy organization to join in the campaign that promotes patient and doctor conversations about treatment options and appropriate care. ASHP has committed to developing a list of medications and treatments that may be overused. The evidence-based list will be available to ASHP members as well as the Choosing Wisely partners, including the ABIM Foundation and Consumer Reports.
“Conversations about what care patients truly need are a shared responsibility among all members of the health care team,” ABIM Foundation President and CEO Dr. Richard J. Baron said. “ASHP’s forthcoming Choosing Wisely list will help pharmacists across the country engage their patients in a dialogue about what care is best for them, and what we can do to reduce waste and overuse in our health care system.”
