Hemispherx Biopharma forms scientific advisory board

Hemispherx Biopharma last week announced the formation of a four-member scientific advisory board (SAB) that will lend their expertise in moving the company forward as it advances its drug development programs.

“Our company is engaged in a number of development initiatives for both Alferon N Injection and our experimental drug, Ampligen,” Hemispherx CEO Thomas Equels said. “The SAB’s expertise and advice will be invaluable as we move forward with both of these products.”

Chairman Dr. William Mitchell is also the chairman of the Hemispherx board of directors. A board-certified physician, Dr. Mitchell is also a Professor of Pathology, Microbiology and Immunology at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. With 14 U.S. patents and more than 200 papers, reviews and abstracts, he brings a wide range of medical and scientific experience to the SAB.

Dr. Ronald Brus has more than 25 years of experience in medicine and drug development. His company, myTomorrows.com, assists patients in obtaining the latest drugs to treat their conditions. He served as CEO of the vaccine company Crucell prior to its acquisition by Johnson & Johnson and as director of the clinical stage biotech, Galapagos.

Inventor of the "Western Blot," Dr. W. Neal Burnette's biomedical research focused on molecular biology and vaccine development. He returned to active duty after 9/11 in the U.S. Army, serving in the Chemical and Biological Defense program and the U.S. Army Medical Research and Material Command. He also served on the President's Interagency Working Group for Weapons of Mass Destruction.

An expert on toll-like receptor 3 (TLR3), Dr. Christopher Nicodemus' primary focus is on enhancing anti-tumor immunity. He leads his own biomedical firm, AIT Strategies, in researching and developing immunotherapeutics. His experience in NDA registrations and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will be a valuable asset in guiding Hemispherx through the regulatory process.
