Sourcing activity for pharmaceutical contract manufacturing has gone up 234% since last year and 220% since last quarter, ThomasNet reported.

While it's not known exactly how much of the nation's pharmaceutical are currently coming from other countries because the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not track the volume of imports of pharmaceuticals into the country, the International Trade Commission has reported the United States imported $127 billion in pharmaceuticals last year, the news agency reported.

Because of COVID-19, there was a spike in activity which is also likely because President Donald Trump may end up requiring essential coronavirus drugs to be made in the United States so that the country can stop depending on pharmaceutical imports as much as before, the news agency reported.

The Government Accountability Office in 2016 noted that 40% of pharmaceuticals completed in the United States had 80% of their active ingredients imported from and manufactured in other countries, according to the news agency.
