BCC Research: Allergy treatment market nothing to sneeze at

A recent BCC Research report on allergy diagnostics and treatment revealed that complex allergies that involve polysensitization and multiple organ involvement are increasing in number, which might lead to more health problems and bigger strains on health care systems.

The World Allergy Organization said that between 30 and 40 percent of the world’s population lives with at least one allergic condition. Some macro trends driving market growth are aging global population, environmental changes, increasing urbanization and changes in dietary habits. The global diagnostic market is predicted to grow at a five-year compound aggregate rate of 6.5 percent, the report said.

In the past five years, numerous allergy products have lost their patent protection, a trend that is expected to continue for the next five years.

“The generics market is expected to grow at a (compound annual growth rate) of 11 percent, while the prescription market is projected to remain in the low single-digit range,” BCC Research analyst Peggy Lehr said. “The generic allergy medicine market is projected to contribute nearly 40 percent of the global revenues by 2020.”

The report shows that the global allergy diagnostic and treatment market is expected to reach $35.3 billion this year, an increase from $31.5 billion in 2014. By 2020, the market is expected to reach $46.8 billion.
