North Carolina has enacted a new law affecting the validity of Class C drivers licenses in relation to controlled substance dispensing. Governor Stein signed S.L. 2025-47 into law on July 1, 2025. This legislation extends the validity of Class C regular drivers licenses for up to two years beyond their expiration date, provided they are not canceled, revoked, or suspended.

The extension applies to licenses expiring on or after July 1, 2025, and remains in effect until December 31, 2027. According to the statute's language, these licenses will be considered "valid" and "unexpired" during this period.

This change is significant for pharmacies as North Carolina law (G.S. 90-106.1) mandates that a qualifying identification must be obtained before dispensing certain controlled substances. The updated statute ensures that extended licenses can be used for such purposes.
