BLS: pharmacist employment to grow slowly in next 8 years

In the next eight years, pharmacists’ employment is only expected to grow 3 percent in the United States, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

slower than the average for other occupations.

Demand for pharmacists in hospitals and clinics will continue to increase because of the daily need for medications to be given to patients and for pharmacists to provide patient care.

The baby-boom generation will keep pharmacists busy as they age and need prescription medications. The demand for pharmacists will also increase because health insurance is more accessible through federal health insurance reform.

It is projected that there will be a decline in pharmacists in traditional settings due, in part, to more mail order and online pharmacy sales.
