The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) announced earlier this week that it has published new guidelines for pharmacists who are currently involved with HIV care.

The guidelines were published in the April 1 edition of its peer-reviewed, scholarly publication, AJHP.

“ASHP Guidelines on Pharmacist Involvement in HIV Care” give a detailed description of the pharmacist’s role within the patient care team when dealing with HIV. Pharmacists can look to the guidelines for a more thorough approach when working with HIV-infected patients as part of a health-care team.

The new guiding principles are based on literature and guidelines for therapy and practice, national and international standards and the general consensus of the field’s experts. The guidelines summarize evidence available for traditional and emerging pharmacist roles that will address current and any future challenges of treating the HIV epidemic in the United States.

The American Academy of HIV Medicine, an independent organization consisting of HIV specialists and care providers, has given its full endorsement of the new ASHP guidelines. The Academy is committed to achieving excellence in HIV/AIDS care and pursuing better care for HIV patients.

The guidelines are available on the ASHP’s website ahead of the print version.
