Walgreens this week announced the launch of its kiosks designated for the safe disposal of medications in Iowa.

Eight Walgreens locations across the state have installed “drug take-back” kiosks.

Joining Walgreens to kick off the program was Terry Branstad, Iowa Governor, Tom Miller, the Attorney General, Chris Hagenow, the House Majority Leader, Charles Schneider, the Senate Republican Leader, and Steve Lukan, the Director of the Governor’s Office of Drug Control Policy.

“By making safe medication disposal kiosks available in select Iowa stores and expanding to other states this year, Walgreens is taking an important first step to reduce the misuse of medications throughout the country and curb the rise in overdose deaths,” Walgreens President of Pharmacy and Retail Operations Richard Ashworth said. “Everyone has a role to play in minimizing prescription drug abuse, and we are committed to being part of a comprehensive solution to reverse this epidemic.”

As of today, there are more than 300 Walgreens locations in 23 states and Washington, D.C. that have installed safe medication disposal kiosks. The kiosks offer an innovative solution to dispose of medications and ensure that they are not abused.
