A recent partnership between Allscripts and CoverMyMeds promises to make access to prescriptions cheaper for many Americans.
Allscripts is an industry leader in the area of e-prescribing and electronic health records (EHRs). CoverMyMeds is a platform for electronic prior authorization (ePA) that impacts as much as 72 percent of prescriptions.
With an estimated 150 million prior authorizations for prescriptions a year, a partnership facilitating transition from phone and fax authorizations to a digital format has the potential to save providers, payers and other stakeholders large sums of money.
“Our partnership allows us to continue to deliver Allscripts vision of providing the most innovative EHRs in the industry,” Allscripts spokeswoman Concetta DiFranco recently told American Pharmacy News.
The partnership enables multi-payer connectivity and supports the pharmacy-initiated retrospective process. At the moment, several standalone portals exist allowing for the ePA of particular drugs through specific payers. Allscripts expects that the demand for EHR will increase, however; and that in turn will increase the use of electronic pre-authorization.
“Much has been discussed about connecting providers with different EHR platforms, but not much thought has been given to connecting providers to the organizations that are integral part of the health care value chain, such as payers and life sciences companies,” DiFranco said. “Improving the prescriptions approval, prescription writing and reimbursement are important imperatives for providers, payers and Allscripts.”
Long-term, Allscripts hopes that rather than existing outside normal workflows its EHR and ePA will become standard and extend savings through the Allscripts client network.
