American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) on Wednesday announced that there are now 2,000 residency programs across the country currently undergoing the ASHP accreditation process.

ASHP is the only accreditor of pharmacy residency training programs in the United States.

“For more than 50 years, ASHP has been at the forefront of accrediting residency programs to enhance pharmacists’ skills as clinical practitioners and leaders,” ASHP CEO Paul W. Abramowitz said. “This achievement of reaching 2,000 residency programs is a testament to ASHP’s vision for pharmacy practice and dedication to preparing pharmacists as direct patient care providers.”

ASHP has grown residency programs by 85 percent since 2007. The company is dedicated to increasing the number of accreditation programs.

“Residency standards have evolved over the years, and ASHP’s residency programs have evolved and grown with them,” Janet A. Silvester, vice president of accreditation standards at ASHP, said. “Our pharmacy residency training programs are designed to ensure that future pharmacists have the practical skills and advanced knowledge to meet the challenging demands of today’s — and tomorrow’s — healthcare environment.”

In March 2016, ASHP will have more details on the number of applicants matched and the number of residency positions filled.
