The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) recently published a step-by-step guide that is intended to help clinical coordinators and managers thrive in the workplace.

Titled the "Pharmacy Clinical Coordinator’s Handbook," the reference guide consists of material contributed by 20 experienced, renowned clinical pharmacists, as well as thorough research of leadership and management in the pharmaceutical field.

The ASHP guide was written for clinical coordinators, both new and experienced, and includes everyday operational and career advice. The publication also provides case examples, samples of forms, a variety of policies, suggested procedures and checklists. There is an extensive glossary and further reading suggestions as well.

The Pharmacy Clinical Coordinator’s Handbook contains strategies for handling the clinical coordinator’s responsibilities, which includes the enactment of clinical pharmacy services, the application of drug programs and safety initiatives for medications. These include coordinating antimicrobial stewardship, drug dosing, pharmacokinetics and many more.

The handbook also puts an emphasis on the role of clinical coordinator as a leader and gives guidance on the development of staff, the incorporation of student pharmacists and residents in their facilities and utilizing important relationships with other managers, physicians and nurses.
