The Cardinal Health Foundation and The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy recently honored student pharmacists nationwide and a clinical professor of pharmacy as part of the Generation Rx education and outreach initiative.

The initiative was started by Cardinal Health Foundation and The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy as part of a collaboration with the American Pharmacists Association (APhA).

As stated in data released by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, more than 15 million people, ages 12 and up, use prescription drugs for non-medical purpose per year. Pharmacists and student pharmacists play a vital part in providing these people with education on prevention. This includes helping parents, educators, leaders in communities and teenagers recognize and comprehend the risks of abusing prescription drugs.

The awards were presented by the organizations at the sixth annual APhA Academy of Student Pharmacists (APhA-ASP) Generation Rx Awards, which took place at the APhA2016 Annual Meeting and Exposition on March 4 in Baltimore. The APhA Generation Rx Award of Excellence was also handed out to a pharmacy professor at the annual exposition.

The awards given out as part of the APhA-ASP Generartion Rx program are part of a nationwide competition amongst APhA-ASP chapters.
