While there are concerns about the unforeseen health impacts of a vaccine for COVID-19, a coalition of pharmaceutical companies has joined together to build confidence in the process and end result.
Organizations in the nation’s pharmaceutical supply and payment chain have released guiding principles for a safe development distribution and allocation of a vaccine. Those organizations span from manufacturers, pharmacists and hospitals to supermarkets, pharmacists and health plan sponsors, PhRMA reported in a press release.
The principles are in essence a commitment on the part of the private sector to an organized, mass immunization against the coronavirus. The collaboration is in part to give voice from the sector to the issues most important to the public during the pandemic. There are seven main principles for the Pharmaceutical Supply and Payment Chain Coalition, the press release reported.
The principles include transparency and rigorous processes that engender public trust. Equitable allocation is listed as paramount as well as public engagement and communication on prioritization and well-coordinated national strategy for distribution are seen as essential. The coalition seeks to ensure vaccinations are conducted in safe environments. Education will be important to combat rumors and misinformation. Lastly, the vaccine must be affordable and financially feasible for all Americans.
“The coalition looks forward to continuing to work together in the best interest of the individuals and families that we serve,” the PhRMA press release reported.
