The South Dakota Department of Health has issued new fish consumption advisories for 2025 following a comprehensive sampling program. The advisories are based on mercury concentrations found in fish samples, with the aim of providing the public with essential information to make informed dietary choices.
Department of Health Secretary Melissa Magstadt emphasized the importance of this initiative: "Our commitment to public health and safety drives the annual fish sampling program.” She highlighted the collaboration between the Department of Health (DOH), Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources (DANR), and Game, Fish and Parks (GFP) as crucial in ensuring that residents have access to up-to-date information regarding fish consumption advisories.
The new advisories specify limitations on consuming certain sizes of Walleye from specific lakes due to mercury levels. For Dry Lake #1 in Clark County, it is advised to limit consumption of Walleye over 21 inches. Similarly, for Lake Henry in Kingsbury County, it is recommended to limit consumption of Walleye over 24 inches.
Magstadt encouraged residents to stay informed: “We encourage everyone to check the DOH website for the latest advisories and take necessary precautions when enjoying locally caught fish."
These efforts align with the Department's mission to protect and improve public health across South Dakota by promoting wellness, preventing disease, and ensuring access to quality healthcare.
