As Memorial Day approaches, the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) and the Bureau of Fire Services (BFS) are urging residents to prioritize safety during their celebrations, particularly when it comes to grilling. The holiday weekend often involves gatherings with family and friends, making it essential to follow recommended precautions to prevent injuries and fires.
Joe Forro, Deputy Director of BFS, emphasized the importance of maintenance and caution: “Before firing up the grill, we want you to follow a few simple safety precautions to avoid serious injuries and fires. Most grill fires are caused by malfunctioning gas grills; maintenance and grill part replacement is critical to protect yourself and your family.”
To ensure safe grilling practices, several guidelines have been issued:
- Always use grills outdoors on a level surface at least 10 feet away from structures like houses or garages. Avoid using grills on balconies or near overhanging eaves.
- Maintain a safe distance between grills and railings, fencing, privacy screens, branches, hanging baskets, or backyard furniture.
- Keep children and pets away from grilling areas.
- Never leave a grill unattended.
- Avoid overloading the grill with food as excess fat can cause flare-ups.
- Regularly clean grills to remove grease buildup.
- In case of fire, call 911 instead of attempting to extinguish it yourself.
For gas grill users:
- Inspect gas tank hoses for leaks before each season's first use. If a leak is detected, turn off the gas valve immediately and seek professional service before further use.
- Before filling propane cylinders, check for any damage such as dents or gouges. Do not overfill cylinders.
- Ensure that the gas is never turned on while the lid is closed to prevent potential explosions.
- If there is a smell of gas while cooking, turn off the valve promptly.
For charcoal grill users:
- Only use charcoal starter fluid; gasoline or kerosene should be avoided. Electric starters require outdoor-rated extension cords.
- Charcoal grills should only be used in well-ventilated outdoor areas due to carbon monoxide emissions from briquettes.
- Dispose of cooled coals properly in metal containers or soak them in water before disposal.
LARA and BFS extend wishes for a safe Memorial Day Weekend while honoring those who sacrificed their lives in service.
