Every summer, many residents of Michigan celebrate Independence Day with fireworks. However, improper use can result in injuries, fires, property damage, or even fatalities. The Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) and State Fire Marshal Tom Hughes are urging everyone to prioritize safety during the holiday.

"As we celebrate this holiday, I urge all residents to enjoy fireworks responsibly," stated Marlon I. Brown, Director of LARA. "Safety must come first — follow all local laws, keep a safe distance, and never allow children to handle fireworks unsupervised. Let’s work together to prevent injuries and ensure a safe, memorable experience for everyone."

Statistics show that over 9,700 people visit emergency rooms annually due to fireworks-related injuries. According to a 2023 report by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, 66% of these incidents occur around the July 4th holiday.

“Each year, Michiganders mark Independence Day with backyard fireworks displays,” said State Fire Marshal Tom Hughes. “We’re asking everyone to take a moment to review some key safety tips before purchasing, handling, or launching fireworks. When you use consumer fireworks, the safety of your friends, family, and neighbors is in your hands.”

LARA has provided several safety guidelines for setting up and using fireworks:

- Purchase from licensed retailers only.
- Follow manufacturer instructions.
- Supervise all activities involving teens or sparklers.
- Maintain a safe perimeter away from people and flammable items.
- Light one firework at a time on solid surfaces outdoors.

Additional advice includes having water nearby for emergencies and properly soaking used fireworks before disposal to prevent trash fires.

There are also specific legal considerations regarding the use of consumer-grade fireworks:

- They may only be ignited on personal property.
- It is illegal to use them on public property without permission or while intoxicated.
- Purchasers must be at least 18 years old.

Residents are encouraged to check local regulations before using fireworks. For more information on legal products and safety tips in Michigan, resources such as the Michigan Fireworks Product Guide are available.
