The National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA) has responded to the Federal Trade Commission’s decision to appoint Emma Mittelstaedt Burnham as associate director of health care in the Bureau of Competition. The statement was issued by NCPA CEO B. Douglas Hoey following the announcement from FTC Chairman Andrew Ferguson.
“Fair competition is essential in the health care sector. Without it, powerful companies like PBMs and insurers manipulate the system in their own favor, and at the expense of consumers, patients, taxpayers, and small providers like independent pharmacies. Ms. Mittelstaedt Burnham has extensive experience investigating bad actors as an attorney with the DOJ, and we expect her to direct that focus to PBMs, where it is badly needed,” said Hoey.
NCPA has a history of working with the FTC on antitrust issues and participates in legal actions at both state and federal levels against pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs) for alleged anticompetitive behavior.
The organization represents more than 18,900 community pharmacies across the United States and advocates for independent pharmacists as accessible health care providers. Additional information about NCPA can be found at www.ncpa.org.
