The Virginia Department of Health has announced a new statewide standing order signed by State Health Commissioner Karen Shelton, MD, on September 10. This order allows pharmacists in Virginia to administer the 2025-2026 COVID-19 vaccine to individuals aged 65 and older, as well as those between 18 and 64 with underlying medical conditions, without needing a prescription. This initiative is in accordance with Virginia Code § 54.1-3408 (I).

Dr. Shelton said, "We realize this has been top of mind for many Virginians in the past several days," adding that they are committed to increasing access to the updated COVID-19 vaccine for all eligible residents.

Pharmacists in Virginia can provide vaccines either through direct authorization from a medical provider or by adhering to protocols set by the Virginia Board of Pharmacy. These protocols align with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) Immunization Schedule. Currently, this schedule includes the 2024–2025 COVID-19 vaccine formulation but not yet the anticipated 2025–2026 version, which is expected to better match circulating strains.

The CDC Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) is set to meet on September 18-19, where they are expected to vote on updated COVID-19 vaccines. Following this meeting, the CDC Director or Secretary of Health and Human Services may approve these recommendations.

Virginians aged 18 to 64 without underlying health conditions and those under 18 are advised to consult their healthcare providers about receiving the COVID-19 vaccine.
