The South Dakota Department of Health (DOH) is inviting middle and high school students to participate in Scrubs Camps and Camp Meds, programs designed to introduce young people to careers in healthcare. These camps are open to students in grades 6 through 8 for Camp Meds and grades 9 through 12 for Scrubs Camp.
According to Department of Health Secretary Melissa Magstadt, “Scrubs Camps and Camp Meds provide high school and middle school students across the state with hands-on experiences and insights into a variety of healthcare careers, allowing them to explore future professions in medicine, nursing, emergency services, and more. We’re proud to support the next generation of healthcare workers and help them see the possibilities available in the healthcare industry.”
Students attending these camps have opportunities for interactive learning alongside healthcare professionals. The activities aim to give participants practical exposure and an understanding of what it takes to enter various fields within healthcare.
The DOH organizes these events at different locations throughout South Dakota so that students from all regions can attend. The department works with schools, local healthcare providers, and community organizations to offer the camps at no cost. Details about upcoming camp dates and locations are available on the Scrubs Camp website.
To support participants, educators, and providers involved in Scrubs Camps, the DOH offers resources such as activity toolkits, promotional materials, and comprehensive guides. These materials are intended to help maximize the benefits of camp participation by providing information about careers in nursing, radiology, therapy services, and other health professions across South Dakota.
Magstadt also said: “As the demand for healthcare professionals continues to grow, Scrubs Camps and Camp Meds serve as a great tool in addressing workforce shortages by encouraging students to pursue careers in healthcare. Students gain hands-on experience in a variety of fields, including nursing, radiology, therapy services, and other vital healthcare professions. These are truly fantastic events, held locally, to support our youth and their potential future in the healthcare workforce.”
Those interested can find more information or register for an event on the DOH website.
