PCCA has announced the release of UniFlow, a new powder excipient base designed for compounding triturations with highly potent, low-dose active pharmaceutical ingredients such as liothyronine sodium (T3) and levothyroxine sodium (T4). The product aims to improve the process by enhancing flow and content uniformity, increasing stability, and reducing preparation time by half.

“With UniFlow, we’re changing the game for T3 and T4 compounding,” said PCCA Vice President of Research and Development Daniel Banov, RPh, MS. “UniFlow is the first base specifically designed to address the known formulation challenges associated with T3/T4. It features a co-blend technology system developed with a low-moisture, high-flowability design — ultimately improving both uniformity and stability.”

Compounding these hormones requires precise handling. Traditional methods often struggle with issues like uneven API distribution and moisture-related degradation, leading to failed potency tests and workflow delays. According to PCCA, UniFlow addresses these concerns by supporting even API distribution and protecting sensitive compounds from environmental moisture.

Feedback from beta testers indicated that using UniFlow allowed them to prepare triturations more quickly and with greater ease. They also reported higher success rates in potency testing. The company states that tasks which previously took 30 minutes using microcrystalline cellulose can now be completed in under 15 minutes with UniFlow, resulting in fewer failed tests and reduced waste.

“The name UniFlow is derived from uniformity and flow,” said PCCA Chief Executive Officer Gus Bassani, PharmD. “When you’re working with APIs in very low concentrations, content uniformity is often a challenge, especially with T3 and T4. What our team has created in UniFlow represents another step forward in our commitment to practical innovation: transforming member feedback into solutions that deliver real results.”

UniFlow is available exclusively to PCCA member pharmacies. Members who use Clinical Services have access to 18 formulations for T3 and T4 triturations as well as several capsule combinations. Additional technical information can be found at www.pccarx.com/uniflow.
