The Virginia State Health Commissioner has rescinded the statewide standing order that allowed pharmacists to dispense and administer COVID-19 vaccines to adults without a prescription. This decision, effective from October 10, 2025, follows updates by the Virginia Board of Pharmacy and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Initially issued on September 10, 2025, the standing order aimed to facilitate vaccine distribution among adult Virginians during the 2025-2026 period. However, recent revisions to the Pharmacist Vaccine Statewide Protocol for those aged eighteen or older have rendered this order unnecessary.

The CDC also updated its Adult Immunization Schedule and Child and Adolescent Immunization Schedule, further supporting the decision to rescind the order. The rescission is in accordance with § 54.1-3408(I) of the Code of Virginia.

The full name of the organization involved in updating protocols is the Virginia Board Of Pharmacy.
