Bob Greenwood, a long-time advocate for independent community pharmacies in Iowa, has received the 2025 John W. Dargavel Medal from the National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA) Foundation. The award was presented during NCPA’s Annual Convention held in New Orleans from October 18 to 21.

The Dargavel Medal, sponsored by McKesson Corporation, recognizes individuals who have shown leadership and achievement on behalf of independent pharmacy. The award is named after John W. Dargavel, who served as executive secretary of the National Association of Retail Druggists—now known as NCPA—from 1933 to 1961. The NCPA Foundation was created in 1953 to honor Dargavel’s legacy.

Greenwood owns and operates several pharmacies in Iowa: Greenwood Drug Inc., Greenwood Compounding, Osterhaus Pharmacy, and Denver Drug. He graduated from Creighton University School of Pharmacy in Omaha in 1977 and began his career in Waterloo, Iowa. Over the years, he has taken on leadership roles with organizations such as NCPA—serving as president from 2010 to 2011—the American Pharmacists Association, and the Iowa Pharmacy Association.

In addition to his professional work, Greenwood has mentored students at both the University of Iowa and Creighton University School of Pharmacy as a preceptor. He also spent twelve years on the Waterloo City Council and joined Creighton University’s Board of Trustees in August 2024.

“Bob Greenwood is a truly exceptional leader and steward of the pharmacy profession, and I couldn’t be more delighted to see him receive the Dargavel Award. Throughout his distinguished career, Bob has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to advancing community pharmacy and mentoring the next generation of pharmacists. His dedication, integrity, and genuine passion for serving patients and our profession have made a lasting impact on countless lives. I’ve had the privilege of knowing Bob for many years, and I can say without hesitation that this recognition is richly deserved. He exemplifies the very best of what it means to be a community pharmacist, and we are incredibly fortunate to have him as a colleague and friend,” said Sharon Sherrer, president elect of the NCPA Foundation Board of Trustees.

The NCPA Foundation is a nonprofit organization established to honor John W. Dargavel's contributions to pharmacy leadership. Donations made to the foundation are tax-deductible under federal law guidelines for charitable giving. The foundation works toward improving health care at the community level by supporting independent pharmacists’ sustainability and growth while raising public awareness about their role as accessible health care providers.
