In 2024, an estimated 1.4 billion people worldwide had hypertension, but only around 20% were able to control the condition through medication or lifestyle changes, according to a recent report by the World Health Organization (WHO). The report highlights ongoing difficulties faced by many countries in providing adequate access to blood pressure treatments.
The WHO identifies several barriers contributing to low rates of hypertension management. These include limited availability of essential medications, inconsistent clinical protocols, and inadequate training for health care professionals. The report recommends measures such as strengthening procurement and supply chain systems for medications and improving both prescribing and dispensing practices among providers.
By addressing these issues, the WHO aims to improve outcomes for people living with hypertension globally.
