In an episode aired in October 2025, ABC News' Nightline explored the risks linked to fake glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) medications being sold on the internet. The investigation found that online sellers are intentionally misspelling the names of GLP-1 brands to avoid detection by authorities and to distribute counterfeit versions of these drugs, which are often used for weight loss.
The report noted that these sellers frequently advertise their products as not requiring a prescription and accept only Bitcoin or cash app payments. These practices are considered warning signs that the medications may be counterfeit and unsafe.
Nightline advised viewers to use the Safe Site Search Tool available on the NABP Safe Pharmacy website before making any purchases. According to Nightline, "This website from NABP provides educational information that helps consumers understand why they should only buy from verified, legitimate websites that comply with NABP patient safety and pharmacy practice standards or applicable laws, including requiring prescriptions for prescription medications."
