The South Dakota Department of Health announced on Mar. 19 an update to its fish consumption advisory listing, encouraging residents to check the department's website for the latest guidance.
The updated advisories are intended to help individuals and families make informed decisions about eating fish from local lakes. "We encourage South Dakotans to regularly check our website for the most up-to-date fish consumption guidance," said Secretary Melissa Magstadt. "These updates help ensure individuals and families have the information they need to make safe and informed choices."
Since 1996, the department has released annual mercury determinations for state lakes. Fish are recognized as a valuable part of a healthy diet, providing nutrients that support heart and brain health. The Department of Health works in partnership with the Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources, as well as Game, Fish and Parks, to monitor fish populations across South Dakota and provide recommendations that allow people to enjoy eating fish while reducing exposure to contaminants.
Residents seeking more information or a complete list of current advisories are encouraged to visit the Department of Health's website.
According to the department, its mission is focused on protecting and improving the health of all South Dakotans by promoting wellness, preventing disease, and ensuring access to quality healthcare.
