The California State Board of Pharmacy announced new requirements on March 26 for nonresident pharmacies dispensing prescription medications or devices into California, effective July 1, 2026.
According to the announcement, nonresident pharmacies—defined as those located outside California that ship, mail, deliver, or otherwise dispense prescription medications or devices into the state—must identify a California-licensed pharmacist employed and working at the nonresident pharmacy to serve as Pharmacist-in-Charge (PIC) over the pharmacy’s California operations. The proposed PIC’s name, license number, and effective date must be submitted to the Board within 90 days of designation.
The designated PIC must be fully authorized to ensure operational compliance with California law. This includes meeting requirements specific to dispensing, recordkeeping, labeling, consultation, controlled substances handling, and staffing. The Board also requires confirmation that the PIC has completed required training provided by the Board.
Any subsequent change in PIC must be reported to the Board within 90 days. For forms and additional compliance information related to these changes, pharmacies are directed to visit the California State Board of Pharmacy’s website.
Nonresident pharmacies are advised to take action now in order to ensure full compliance by July 1, 2026. Further details can be found on the official roster page.
