Governor Gretchen Whitmer issued proclamations on May 4 designating May as Building Safety Month and Electrical Safety Month in Michigan. The announcement highlights the work of professionals who help ensure safe structures and communities throughout the state.

The annual observance aligns with national awareness campaigns led by the International Code Council and the Electrical Safety Foundation International, which focus on building and electrical safety across the country. The aim is to raise public understanding about practices that keep homes, workplaces, and gathering spaces secure.

“Building and Electrical Safety Month gives us the opportunity to appreciate and support our skilled trades professionals and promote awareness of this important work,” said Marlon I. Brown, Director of the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA). “Though May brings heightened attention to building safety, our commitment to safeguarding the places where people live, work, and gather remains steadfast throughout the year.”

This year’s theme for Building Safety Month is “Built to Last,” emphasizing resilient infrastructure. LARA’s Bureau of Construction Codes works year-round to ensure that buildings constructed in Michigan are safe, sound, and sustainable.

LARA will continue its partnership with both organizations through training sessions, outreach efforts, and educational activities during May aimed at promoting safety among building and electrical professionals. More information about LARA's Bureau of Construction Codes can be found at the agency's website.

The broader goal is ongoing: maintaining a strong commitment to safety beyond just one month each year.
