Governor Gretchen Whitmer proclaimed May 4 as International Firefighters’ Day in Michigan, honoring the dedication and bravery of the state’s more than 19,000 firefighters. The announcement was made on May 4 and highlights the service provided by over 1,000 fire departments across Michigan.

The proclamation aims to recognize the crucial role firefighters play in protecting people, pets, and property throughout the state. Governor Whitmer said, “Every day across our state, firefighters rush toward danger to save people, pets, and property. It’s up to us to have their backs, which is why we’ve invested almost $2 billion across seven bipartisan budgets to support first responders and keep people safe. This International Firefighters Day, I encourage every Michigander to recognize the incredible work and selfless sacrifice of our firefighters and first responders. Let’s keep working together to move Michigan forward.”

Marlon I. Brown, Director of the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA), said training is vital for firefighter safety: “We celebrate firefighters for their dedication, professionalism, and selflessness, and we recognize the critical role that training plays in keeping them safe—both physically and mentally. LARA is proud to continue supporting firefighter training and preparedness, so these first responders have the tools and support they need.”

State Fire Marshal Tom Hughes also commented on the occasion: “The commitment firefighters make every day to protect the public deserves our deepest gratitude. International Firefighters’ Day is an opportunity to thank the firefighters in our communities for their resilience, service, and sacrifice.”

Residents are encouraged by officials to mark International Firefighters’ Day by improving home safety measures such as creating a fire escape plan or checking smoke alarms. The MI Prevention program—a statewide effort led by LARA with local partners—continues its work advancing fire safety education throughout Michigan.

The recognition comes as part of ongoing efforts from state agencies like LARA that aim not only at honoring emergency responders but also at providing them with resources needed for effective response.
